Purple-Yellow Skin Pik Bilum (Survivor-Made)
Survivor-Made Bilums
This bilums was handwoven by a survivor accessing Femili PNG's case management services. By purchasing bilums directly from these clients, we support them to become financially independent so that they can escape the cycle of violence, and build meaningful and sustainable lives.
The Skin Pik Bilum
The Skin Pik design is a symbol of strength and resilience.
It tells the story of many financially and socially disadvantaged women in PNG. When there is a celebration in the village, these women are left only small fatty squares of pig skin to eat at the end of the meal. The square Skin Pik design represents these squares of pig skin, and has been woven into bilums as a way of reclaiming this significant cultural symbol. Skin Pik bilums serve as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience women have shown in the face of gender and social inequality.
Skin Pik bilums are traditionally woven by women in Goroka.
