Making a difference in survivor's lives

While violence affects us all, violence against women and girls is one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, one in three women will experience violence in their lifetime. In PNG, that rate increases to two in three.

As a Papua New Guinean non-profit, Femili PNG runs free support centres for survivors of family and sexual violence in Lae, Port Moresby and Goroka. They also operate the Bel isi PNG safe house in Port Moresby.

Since opening in 2014, Femili PNG has helped over 6,700 clients access legal interventions, medical assistance, safe accommodation, financial support, relocation assistance, and more. They also undertake outreach in communities and schools, to raise awareness about violence and the help available. They train community leaders to support survivors in locations they can’t reach directly; and collaborate closely with other service providers to enhance their impact.

FemiliPNG Australia is an Australian support organisation for Femili PNG. We recognise that local people, communities and organisations are best-placed to respond to the needs of Papua New Guinean families. That’s why we put Femili PNG at the centre of all our work – with them leading the way and us operating in support. Our focus is on providing difficult-to-source technical, project, and financial skills to extend Femili PNG’s reach and impact. All the funds we raise go directly towards supporting Femili PNG’s life-changing services.

FemiliPNG Australia (ABN 41 706 886 372) is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, and is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient by the ATO. Australian donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Your donation will support Femili PNG to:

Assist survivors of family and sexual violence to access safe accommodation.

Under the Bel isi PNG Initiative, Femili PNG operates a safe house in Port Moresby. This provides survivors with a safe place to stay when escaping violence. It is equipped with 8 bedrooms, a kitchen, a laundry, an outdoor living space, and an accessible bathroom for people living with disability. In 2022-23, Femili PNG supported 118 clients and their dependents with safe accommodation at the Bel isi PNG Safe House.

Femili PNG also works in close collaboration with other service providers to link survivors with safe houses across Papua New Guinea. This is an important part of supporting survivors in hard-to-reach locations. Throughout 2022-23, a total of 457 people were assisted to find safe accommodation.

Your donation helps to ensure Femili PNG can continue linking survivors with safe accommodation.

Link survivors of violence with law and justice interventions.

Femili PNG’s clients often need assistance lodging interim protection orders (IPOs) in court. These IPOs serve as a legal warning, and put conditions in place to prevent further violence. Importantly, however, survivors are not required to separate from their partner/family unless they choose to. This allows the IPO not only to increase the survivor’s safety, but also to maintain their autonomy.

After obtaining an IPO, clients can obtain a protection order, which allows the conditions of the original IPO to be put in place for up to 2 years. In 2022-23, Femili PNG helped 127 survivors of violence to secure protection orders.

Your donation helps Femili PNG to continue linking survivors with vital law and justice interventions.

Provide survivors with business start-up kits.

Escaping violence is often the first of many challenges a survivor will face. Often, after years of abuse, survivors have become isolated and need support achieving their long-term goals.

Case workers encourage survivors to talk about what a different future, free from violence, might look like for them. Many survivors express a desire to become self-reliant and to generate an income. This has led to some of Femili PNG’s clients starting small businesses, such as selling products at a road side stall.

Case workers can help clients apply for an injection of funds from Femili PNG’s ‘Business Start Up Kit’. This provides them with the resources needed to build a strong and sustainable future for themselves.

Your donation helps Femili PNG to continue providing survivors with these life-changing business start-up kits.

Train community leaders and service providers to support survivors.

Providing support directly to survivors is just one aspect of Femili PNG’s vital work. They also train community leaders to recognise the signs and impacts of family and sexual violence, educate them about relevant legislation, and teach them how to support survivors in their own communities. This is essential to increasing survivors’ access to high quality services, especially in locations far away from Femili PNG’s main case management centres.

Your donation helps Femili PNG to continue training community leaders and service providers to support survivors in hard-to-reach locations.

Deliver awareness raising sessions to adults and children across Papua New Guinea.

Femili PNG undertake outreach in communities and schools, to raise awareness about the impacts of family and sexual violence, the relevant laws, and the help available. Your donation helps Femili PNG to continue educating the community.

Support survivors with repatriations, relocations and reintegrations.

Survivors are often isolated from their families and communities while experiencing violence. Femili PNG provides assistance with repatriations, which involve helping survivors to find and return to their family.

Femili PNG also supports clients with relocations, which involve assisting clients to move to another location to escape violence; and reintegrations, which involve helping survivors to safely return to the community they experienced violence in.

In 2022-23, a record-breaking 109 clients were repatriated, relocated and reintegrated into their communities.

These cases are some of the most complex Femili PNG's staff deal with, involving family tracing, coordination with partners, negotiation with local communities, and the provision of resources to help the client start a new life.

Your donation supports Femili PNG to continue assisting survivors with repatriations, relocations and reintegrations.

The importance of regular giving

As a free support service, Femili PNG relies on donations to ensure long-term and sustainable programs are available for survivors of family and sexual violence in PNG. Regular giving means FemiliPNG Australia receives a steady income stream to support Femili PNG’s vital services. This helps to keep Femili PNG’s services accessible to those who need them most. We greatly appreciate generosity of our donors in helping us to continue our work.
